Fresh Thinking

For me, this is the time of year to do some fresh thinking, to become grateful and aware of sprouts and buds and what might be preparing to bloom. This is the time of year I prioritize time in nature. Maybe because I have had my head in my financial accounts, preparing my taxes, I have an intense longing for a different kind of green!

Until recently, I didn’t prioritize these spring longings. They got pushed down my priority list under all sorts of to-do items. For the past couple of years, I have made sure I get out in the woods by planning retreats with a small group of seekers of a slower pace and peace. For me, writing and visual art are a source of grounding and self-connection.

I have been trained as a spiritual director, meaning, I support people in finding their own questions and answers within. My favorite ways to search within involve writing and art prompts. When working with groups, I tend to bring the kind of folks together who are supportive and become the rich soil for the group’s mindful curiosity and authentic expression. When I facilitate workshops and retreats, rather than doing much lecturing, I go straight to scattering prompts and practices like seeds, not knowing which will take root and sprout. Once the seeds are scattered, I get to participate as part of the community garden. In our group programs and in smaller side conversations, we share our curiosities and insights while we soak in nature’s beauty and move at her pace.

What are your Spring rituals?

How do you keep yourself energized and grounded?

With LOVE,

 - Brooke

Get Ready to Celebrate Seven Years of
Poetry by the Bay

In honor of Poetry Month, our 7th annual Poetry by the Bay event will occur at the LaPorte Library on April 20, 2024, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00PM at the LaPorte Library. Now is the time to find your best poem or poems, finish that work in progress, or get started with your latest creation so that you will be ready to celebrate Poetry Month with WiVLA.

Our relationship with the LaPorte Library started in 2018 when we held our first poetry readings there on June 9, 2018. Although we were not able to secure an April date with the library, they gladly accommodated us in June. In past years, members attending the poetry readings have stayed in the area for lunch and some of us have ventured to Sylvan Beach, which is less than a mile from the library. Maybe this year, someone might be inspired to recite some poetry by the bay.

2024 Anthology Contest
Journey Into Time
Inklings Publishing is proud to collaborate with Women in the Visual and Literary Arts and the Houston Writers Guild to bring local aspiring authors an opportunity for publication in the anthology compilation of winning and honorable mention short stories from the open contest: Journey into Time. We are asking for submissions of short stories (fiction or non-fiction) that in some way incorporate the concept of time.

Time does not have to be the main focus of the story, but some reference to time must be included. The theme is up to your interpretation, so long as the concept of time appears within your story. For example:
  • Characters might travel through time.
  • A character may frequently check her watch.
  • The story might focus on the passage of time though some piece of a character's life.
The winning and honorable mention stories will be compiled into an anthology for a general audience readership. Sexual content and violence may be presented but must serve the purpose of the story.

NOTE: The "journey" aspect of Journey into Time refers to our Journey Series. This is the title of our series of yearly anthologies in which the winning contest stories are published. A "journey" does not need to be present in a literal sense within the stories to be eligible.

 Stories will be judged on:
  • Strong plot arcs with satisfying endings
  • Well-rounded characters Imagery - is it easy to visualize the story’s action, setting, and characters?
  • Good command of spelling and grammar (professional copyediting not necessary for submission)
  • Effective use of the theme - in what way does time play a part in your story?
ALL SUBMISSIONS will receive general constructive feedback from the judges. Only the winners and honorable mentions whose work is to be included in the final published anthology will receive feedback and consultation from our developmental editor.

Send them your submissions in two Word documents with subject line: "Journey into Time Contest Submission".

The theme for this year’s collaboration is Entangled. The projected month for the exhibition and public reading is September. Because of the time involved in planning and executing the collaborative works, now is the time to start finding a partner. Please take advantage of our member directory on the WiVLA website to find your co-collaborator. WiVLA will also offer opportunities to meet potential partners in person and online.

Jean King ~ I have to admit that as a visual artist I am fascinated with the location of Grackle and Grackle. It occupies the former home and studio of Dorothy Hood. Talk about good vibrations! Miah (pronounced Maya) and her husband run Grackle and Grackle, offering consulting, writing workshops, including songwriting, taught by a range of writers. In addition, they have taken part in projects such as Postcards from Space in collaboration with M. D. Anderson and Aurora Picture Show, Figurative Poetics Downtown Banner Project with Core Designs Studio, and InPrint. Finally, Miah led us in a short writing exercise. If you missed this meeting you can find it on our WiVLA YouTube channel. Nothing is better than being there in the Zoom, but watching online runs a close second. You can find out all about Grackle and Grackle on line at www.grackleandgrackle.com

How WiVLA Changed the Last Quarter Century of My Life

I first came to WiVLA in 1999 as a speaker. Invited by Karleen Koen to talk about my career as a freelance writer in Europe, I received a free membership, which I have continued to renew for 25 years. At the time, I was suffering serious writer's block, having moved 17 times in 21 years and each time, except the last, having rebuilt writing connections with magazines and newspapers.  After meetings back in those days, attendees would move from The Printing Museum on Clay Street to Cafe Express on West Gray to continue sharing. Until that night, I had always been a member of the glass-half-empty clan. WiVLA members' supportive comments during the dinner brought about a cosmic shift in my view of that glass.

After seven years of being unable to write, I suddenly wrote and contributed two poems to WiVLA anthologies being prepared by Vivian Macias, the literary co-chair. One was the Black and White anthology of art and writing, and the other, a chapbook for The Houston Women's Summit in 1999.

The next positive outcome was a job as a magazine feature writer and editor in charge of external publications at MD Anderson Cancer Center. For 13 years, I was able to write the human-interest stories of cancer. For four of those (2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013) the Lone Start Awards named me "Public Relations Communicator of the Year" for the state of Texas.

However, most importantly for my creative spirit, the third outcome of WiVLA affirmation and encouragement led to a sequence of poetry workshops and poems over the years and finally to the publication of my full-length collection Frogs Don't Sing Red (Kelsay Books, 2023). I'm now halfway through writing poems for the next book!

Our Pearl for March: Lee Steiner
One Pearl:  Everywoman is welcome.
Once you step into the WiVLA realm, you are a part of a network where you are valued and respected, no matter where you are in your creative journey.
Another Pearl:  Everywoman can contribute.
With Visual, Literary and everything between, everyone’s combined efforts are powerful.  Our pool of resources is deep, each member adding to the flow of ideas, solutions, and directions that feed our “WiVLA-bility.”
28 More Pearls:  Everywoman is necessary.
I’m proud of my years with WiVLA!  Serving on the board showed me that every one of us can have a role but no woman serves alone.  Together, we move forward – here’s to the next 30 years!

Having been a Houstonian for twenty years before moving to Atlanta, Mildred J Mills is delighted to bring her story back home. In Daddy’s House: A Daughter’s Memoir of Setbacks, Triumphs & Rising Above Her Roots, Mills speaks authoritatively about her relatable life experiences, rising from the cotton fields in rural Alabama to an IT executive in corporate America and beyond by taking responsibility for her actions, extracting positive and negative lessons from her parents, and using setbacks as stepping-stones to the American dream.
