It’s going to be a hot time in Houston this summer! Meaning, of course, a summer rife with possibilities. Summer is often a time to try new adventures, learn something new, extend the boundaries – maybe even go parasailing!
Well, that probably won’t be me, up there floating above a boat, but summer has always been a time of learning and exploring for me. I’ll be taking my annual sojourn, this time going vertically, up to northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan looking for cool weather, lakes, and woods. There’ll be kayaking, hiking, family, and new friends. I’ll finish with five days at the International Sketchbook Symposium in Chicago. Four different sketching teachers, several demonstrations, and a new city to explore!
What about you? Where is your internal compass pointing? What does your summer map look like? A new place with new terrain? Maybe an art or writing workshop? Explore Houston in a new way? (Take a tour of the Cistern with WiVLA on June 11!) Dedication to your art or writing practice? Maybe a yoga practice or exercise in a cool gym. What about that pile of books by your bedside that are calling your name? Enjoy the summer’s possibilities and fill yourself with the joy of being renewed.
Speaking of being renewed, our next exhibition, Renewal, has a deadline that is quickly approaching. The exhibit will be held at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center from August 20 to October 20. The theme of Renewal reflects the resilience of the Meyerland community as they recovered from two floods within a ten month period. WiVLA is responding to that theme and creating visual and literary work for the exhibit. Now is the time to explore those ideas with your words or your art. Deadline for entries is June 15.
Whatever form your renewal takes, embrace the new direction, the satisfaction, the opportunity. Revel in this hot time and take advantage of what is out there waiting for you!
