Happy New Year!

Margo is patiently waiting for me to send her this, my first President’s letter.

I sit down with my word document’s cursor blinking in my face. I hear the cursor talking to me. Like the old commercial with a customer staring through the storefront, fingers tapping on the glass, waiting for the store to open and repeating, it says, “Open. Open. Open.” Just a couple of years ago I joined WIVLA, the mission statement tapping on my shoulder with my favorite values; inspiration, cooperation, invention, nurturing, support, mutual respect. Now I find myself fully engaged with folks waiting to hear my voice.

I find blank pages and blank canvases very intimidating. I need a prompt! If you’ve asked me about my personal or professional life, you know the words start flowing nonstop. A simple prompt and boom, it is 24/7 flow.

I give myself a prompt. What energizes me when I think about WIVLA in 2024? Off we go. It is WIVLA’S 30th anniversary and I imagine all the windows and doors that we’ll open. All the ways writers and artists get and stay in the flow. I think of all the ways the WIVLA board members make the mission come alive by planning and giving voice to member meeting presentations, member highlights, workshops, shows, readings, and contests that culminate in publications.

I’m a recovering people-pleaser, meaning I am trying to live with loads more ease and authenticity. Making art and writing hold me accountable to my personal mission. Joining WIVLA, I pushed myself to show up and write more and paint more and prioritize my creative life. What joy it is to do this within a community of encouragers and enthusiasts with beautiful history and tangible wisdom! I feel a sense of renewal and revitalization, an energy building, fueling our creative spirit, individually and collectively. As you all know, expressing yourself through words and images requires self-reflection, discernment, and a boatload of conscious and sub-conscious decisions.

While my family gathers in anticipation of the holidays, I sit like a child excited for the ways our collaborations and innovations will be the gifts we share throughout the new year. May your creativity be abundant and sustained. May it feed your soul!

 - Brooke

Rebecca Chirak

Rebecca Chirak has been chronicling ‘interesting things I have seen and heard’ since age 5, writing on an almost daily basis since she was in fourth grade, and is now finally sharing her voice with readers. One of her short stories was featured in WiVLA and Houston Writers Guild’s 2023 anthology Journey into Art and her debut novel will be published in 2024, to be followed by a short story collection. (On that note, if anyone has strong opinions about publishing under a pen name vs one’s real name, please share those thoughts with her ASAP as she is still very much undecided on that issue and is rapidly running out of time to make the final decision.)

She has been Muslim since 2005 and has a lot to say to, for and about Muslim women, especially converts and Muslim women living in the West. She has lived in Houston since 2010 after growing up in western New York and living in Russia, Turkmenistan, Brooklyn, and northern VIrginia. She is an active member of Writespace and the Women’s Fiction Writers Association (WFWA) and is thrilled to be joining Ellen Seaton as a literary co-chair for WiVLA in 2024.

Her day job is in education. She attended Bryn Mawr College for her bachelor degree (in Russian language and linguistics) and Sam Houston State for her masters (in Comparative and global education). After writing, she is also passionate about travel and kayaking.

~ Publications by Denise Bossarte ~
(1) Denise Bossarte is happy to announce that her poem "The River" has been published in Issue #1: Wild Abandon of the online literary journal- the engine(idling It was a poem written spontaneously at a local park in the fall a couple of years ago. She was sitting on a bench on the high river bank watching the leaves fall down toward the river. Often her best work is this kind of spontaneous poetry! https://www.engineidling.net/issue1 (2) Denise also has a personal essay, "Oatmeal Cookies," in the newly released Written Tales Chapbook XI: Nostalgia (Written Tales Magazine). The cool thing is after each story/essay/poem is an "interview" with the author which is as interesting and fun as the submissions! hotpoet has launched Equinox, a biannual digital multimedia journal that showcases poets, writers, and artists. While solstices are the extremes of the year, an equinox is equidistant, poised on the edge of one thing or another, the cusp of change or transformation. With this archetypal significance in mind, Equinox strives to explore the contemplative and motivational power of writers and artists; to celebrate how word and image can create a world and then change it.

We invite you to send us your poems, flash fiction, flash essay, photography, and art. We look for contemplative, argumentative, globally aware, despair-resistant, and apathy-abolishing works.

Spring Submission: December 1st through February 18th with a publication date of March 20th.

We accept submissions via Submittable.
