August 20th Meeting Presentation:
A Sugary Road to Art
Andreina Cova Wilson, Baker’s Oven Houston

Andreina Cova Wilson is a Venezuelan baker who lives in Houston. Her official journey into baking and pastry goes back 12 years, but her love for the arts goes back further. After completing graphic design studies at The Art Institute of Houston, she made a jump into culinary arts in Mexico City, followed by further studies in Colombia.

She comes from a traditional Venezuelan family and traveled around America during her college years, which enabled her to learn and experience different cultures. After many turns and changes in her life, Houston became her home and home to her baking business. She now combines her love of art with her culinary skills to create sugar confections that are guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds and impress your art cravings.

Be sure to check out her social media accounts to be a part of her sugary journey

Please join us at the monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 20th to learn about Andreina's sugary journey.

August 2019 President's Message by Lee Steiner

Just a quick President’s message this month since I plan to spend all August getting ready for fall.

A stroll through a store and a glance at the Sunday newspaper ads show I’m not the only one thinking ahead. After back-to-school ads all summer, I’m now seeing Halloween décor and hearing about rumored sightings of Christmas trees.

For my own book art business, September through the December holidays is my busy season, so I use summer to hunker down in the studio and make books for upcoming markets.

August will see some WiVLA hunkering down as well as we prep for the fall festivities where we'll celebrate WiVLA’s 25th anniversary. Much behind-the-scenes work goes into planning these events, and the WIVLA board could use your help!

If you’d like to volunteer to organize and promote, to donate goods or to collect donations for raffle prizes, or to set up, decorate, or hostess at an event, you can email me at Leesteinertw@yahoo.com, and I’ll gladly direct you to the right person. Here’s what’s happening:
  • On Saturday, September 21 we have the WiVLA Retrospective, a celebration of our archives at the Rockwell Pavilion at the UH Library on the central campus. This includes a reception, exhibition, and archive tour.

  • On Tuesday, October 15, instead of our monthly meeting at Archway, we’ll host our Members’ Market & Fundraiser at The Printing Museum. We need donated raffle prizes, and members can sign up to sell their own art or books as part of our fundraiser.

  • To top off the year, we’re combining two annual events into one fun-filled evening. We’ll kick off the evening with our annual literary readings at Archway Gallery, followed by more food, festivities, fun, and friendship.

  • Oh, did I mention? WiVLA will hold our biennial Collaboration Show in early summer 2020 at The Holocaust Museum! Speed dating for pairs will begin this August and only members can register for a spot in this high-profile, space-limited exhibition!
I believe the most rewarding aspect of WiVLA membership is the bonds we develop with other members.  These opportunities are your chance to build more, for yourself and your sister WiVLA-ites, as we congratulate ourselves on reaching this 25th anniversary year!

Lee Steiner
President

Midsummer Light Exhibition Attracts Lunchtime Crowd

Everyone agreed that the Midsummer Light exhibition was a success. Our juror, Valentina Atkinson, selected some great pieces, and Susan Salter sold her encaustic piece. During the recent WiVLA exhibition at the Cloisters Gallery, several WiVLA members met for lunch at the Treebeard's Luncheon Buffet in the gallery and noticed that many of the patrons spent time walking around the perimeter of the room looking at the art. Several members said it was great to view the exhibit and to enjoy lunch together. Members who enjoyed lunch and our art included: Lee Steiner, Lillian Tharp, Pam Davis, Leigh Owen, Gretchen McDaniel, Maggie Baldwin, Sally Worthington, and Kay McStay.

Sandy Lawrence, July presenter, Challenged Us to BE KNOWN!

Sandy shared with us her journey to being a public relations specialist and influencer. During her discussion, she described the 5 Essential Tips about How to Break Through, Get Noticed and Be Known.

Sandy's business, Perceptive Public Relations, provides PR and marketing services for small businesses and authors, and she stressed the importance of the power of a social media presence in the digital age. Many of the attendees signed up for inclusion on her mailing list, and some of us have already started attending her webinars. For more information about her services and her weekly webinars, see her website at http://PerceptivePublicRelations.com.
