The President's Message:
This time of year, I muse about what I perceive as applied newness. Spring seems a more natural start to the year. In winter we ought to be allowing more time for rest and reflection. I’ve not been one to take on New Year’s resolutions, certainly not ones that force me into cultural and societal expectations. This time of year, I am just starting to listen more carefully to my own natural rhythms.

A longer break from the normal pace allows me more time to discern what is mine to attend to and what is not mine that I want to let go of.  Rather than resolutions, I welcome the intentions that come from restful reflection. Now that I am working full-time, it is clear how important discernment is to my balance, alignment, and fulfillment. Ten years ago, while studying to become a spiritual director, a personal definition of discernment emerged. When discerning how I spend my time and whether or not an opportunity or commitment is “for me,” I ask myself “Will this energize or deplete me?” It is hard to believe how much energy I generate when I make decisions with these criteria in mind.

There are plenty of opportunities to discern how we “pay” attention to things that utterly deplete us and how impactful we can be when we engage in ways that energize us.

May you each find ways to bring yourselves the generative fulfillment you seek. May you each honor your natural rhythms and processes that support your whole beings. May your creativity serve you in ways that build and fuel you this month.

Inviting Collaborators on Instagram: #ExtendSocialReach
Melody Locke
Like you, WiVLA wants to increase the number of followers and engagement. One of the easiest ways to gain more exposure is to take advantage of post collaboration.

Collaborating with another account gives your content access to their followers, which can introduce your account and message to new audiences. The additional exposure can increase engagement and help your account perform better in Instagram’s algorithm.

Instagram makes it easy to invite collaborators—if you understand the process!
We have created a five-minute video that demonstrates the process.
  • To accept an invitation to collaborate, click the heart at the top of your feed.
  • You’ll then see a message that someone has invited you to collaborate.
  • Following your review, you can accept the request.
If you follow WiVLA on Instagram, WiVLA will follow you, too.
To increase the number of posts on the WiVLA feed, you can tag WiVLA (wivlahouston) and invite WiVLA to collaborate with you.

Maintaining the social media for WiVLA is a volunteer task for a small number of our members. Inviting WiVLA to collaborate extends your reach and keeps our feed fresh—it’s a #WinWin!

Member Highlight
Pat Waughtal

Color, light, and the beauty of nature inspire Pat Waughtal. She is grateful for her artist’s eyes, which allow her to see the magnificence of the created world around us.

Pat is a native Houstonian who started her art career in the late 1960s with drawing classes at Glassell School of Art. Her love of color soon led her to study acrylic painting with Lamar Briggs for two years. In the 1980s, she switched her medium to watercolors and had the good fortune to study with Barbara Jeffrey Clay for several years. Since then, she has attended many workshops to increase her skills and has also explored oils, pastels, and collage.

During the pandemic, Pat had the good fortune to be introduced to Louise Fletcher’s online course, "Find Your Joy." Her eclectic art background finally came together as she discovered that mixed media was my art form!

Since completing Louise's course, she has won three Best of Show awards and is delighted to have found a whole new group of art friends in the Houston Area Art Tribe (HAAT). Through members of HAAT, she discovered and joined WIVLA.

Pat is married to Russell Orr, a supportive husband, and has four children, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She has been involved in community service with the Houston Junior Forum and the Gathering Place over the years and serves as president of the Houston Art Society.

Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Houston and a Master of Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman’s University.  Her career as an Occupational Therapist working in rehab and as a hand therapist was exciting and rewarding.

Pat is actively involved with the Houston Art Society, the Watercolor Society of Houston, and the Pastel Society of Southeast Texas and is a new member of WIVLA.

Two pieces published this fall
Dr. Glass on LinkedIn
“A Long Way from Home” in the Examined Life Journal, about a young undocumented woman (my hospice patient), who arrived in Houston only to find out several weeks later that she was pregnant AND had an aggressive liver cancer. She made an incredibly unselfish decision, different from what I might have done in her shoes. Sadly, the piece is only available to subscribers. She meant a lot to me.
“Homeless and Dying,” named runner-up for the Perkoff Prize at the Missouri Review, was published in their fall edition. I loved.loved.loved. the photo they chose to illustrate this essay, again about one of my young adult hospice patients, who was taken in by the parents of one of his friends. It makes me sad you can’t read the entire essay but you can see the first few pages online. There are angels among us, y’all, if we just keep our eyes open.

Robot Transcendence is a series of short explorations into human-robot relationships.
These five stories examine what it would mean for robots to be an integral part of our world and how they would interact and work with us.

Deborah K. Frontiera
Two Pieces Juried into an Anthology
Deborah's books
Deborah K. Frontiera had two short pieces accepted into the 2025 U.P. Reader, an annual juried anthology put out by the Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association.

The first is a short story, Penny Postcard's Journey--the imaginative but as realistic as possible story of a postcard that took over 70 years to reach its destination.
The second, Losing My Marbles, is a humorous memoir of a game of marbles when the author was in the second grade.
The anthology will be published in the spring of 2025.

Equinox Volume 8
Spring 2025
Biannual Open Call

hotpoet has launched Equinox, a biannual digital multimedia journal that showcases poets, writers, and artists.

While solstices are the extremes of the year, an equinox is equidistant, poised on the edge of one thing or another, the cusp of change or transformation. With this archetypal significance in mind, Equinox strives to explore the contemplative and motivational power of writers and artists; to celebrate how word and image can create a world and then change it.
We invite you to send us your poems, flash fiction, flash essay, photography, and art. We look for contemplative, argumentative, globally aware, despair-resistant, and apathy-abolishing works.

Theme: Inner Chambers, Secret Rooms
This theme invites you to shift your focus to interior spaces, whether literal or metaphorical. As always, you are free to respond to this theme in any way that is meaningful to you. We are eager to visit the rooms you remember, the chambers you imagine, the havens you invent.
Entry Deadline: 2/18/2025
Entry Fee: $5/submission
(3 pieces in any one genre (poetry, flash prose, or image)

Water is the pulse of our planet, the silent rhythm that sustains all life. From the smallest droplets to the vast oceans, it nourishes, cleanses, and shapes our world in ways both profound and humble. This exhibition is a celebration of water's timeless beauty and its vital role in the balance of nature. As we explore the various forms and faces of water—its power, its tranquility, its resilience—we are reminded of its irreplaceable presence in our lives.

In this tribute, we invite you to reflect on the many ways water touches us all: as a source of life, a force of nature, and a symbol of purity. Through the lens of art, science, and culture, we hope to deepen our appreciation for water and inspire a renewed commitment to its protection. May this exhibition serve as a reminder of the profound connection we share with this precious resource, and the responsibility we bear to preserve it for future generations

The Ekphrastic Review
Quarterly Open Call

Ekphrastic works

We define "ekphrasis" or "ekphrastic" as "creative writing inspired by visual art." Wherever the art takes you is fine, whether it is "about" the art or artist, or about something else.
We love all the arts, but only consider ekphrasis after visual arts such as painting, sculpture, collage, assemblage, and photography. Performative, musical, or moving picture arts, such as symphonies, cinema, or dance are amazing, but outside of our niche.

Theme: Open to Ekphrastic works
Entry Deadline: 1/31/2025
Entry Fee: $3.75/submission
Length: Prose 50 to 4000 words. We have a very strong preference for work in the 100-1000 range. Poetry can be any length, but please query about any that are unusually long.

The community is enriched by some of the nation’s top emerging writers, who study at the University of Houston Creative Writing Program and teach at Inprint and various local community centers, schools, and universities.

We have another excellent collaboration on the books!
Each member who participated in the ENTANGLED Collaboration received a copy of the catalog containing all the artwork and literary pieces. Melody still has a limited supply of copies in her studio that you can purchase for $15.

In addition, you can also purchase additional copies of the REFLECTION catalog from the 2022 Collaboration for $5.
Stop by Studio 320 at Silver Street Studios to purchase additional copies of either catalog. Silver Street Studios is located in the Main Yard of Sawyer Yards. Call ahead at 713-851-0134 to ensure that she’ll be in the studio when you arrive.
