November 2019

November Literary Reading and Holiday Gathering -- Note date - Both on Thursday, Nov. 21
To honor our 25th anniversary the theme is Silver.
(No regular meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.)
Plan to arrive 5:45. Meeting Begins 6:00

We have combined the annual Literary Reading and the Holiday Gathering for a stimulating and festive evening on Thursday, November 21! Because the evening is so full of activities, we will begin at 6 pm.
Archway Gallery has traditionally reserved their November Literary Reading for WiVLA.  This year’s theme is “Silver,” in honor of our 25th Anniversary. The list of readers has already been filled, with a waiting list in place. There are sure to be wonderful literary pieces to mark this evening! (Contact literary@wivla.org to be placed on waiting list.)
The evening will also include a holiday table of many treats, a fun art project to make, Typewriters on the Fly (write your own verse, thought, essay, list, flash fiction...) and lots of time to visit with your new and known WiVLA friends. (“One is Silver, and the other’s Gold” as the song says.)
Door prizes, too! If you’d like to contribute to the door prizes, let Sally Worthington know worthington75@gmail.com. A sign-up genius notice will be sent out soon for members to bring goodies for the refreshment table.
First part of the evening will include the inspiring literary readings. The Annual Holiday Gathering will follow - complete with fun projects, prizes, and tasty treats. The camaraderie is infectious! Plan to stay and enjoy the gift of time to be together with WiVLA friends!

President's Message --
Are you being served?

"Are you being served?" "Thank you for your service!" Meanings and uses for the word serve include:
   *To aid, assist, or help
   *To provide or to supply
*To carry out the duties, and
   *To promote or further.
Most of these describe what we do on the WiVLA Board of Directors.
A signature feature of WiVLA’s leadership is our willingness to work together as one for the benefit of all, in the vein of ‘many hands make light work.’
November is our month to present the board nominees for 2020. Each position is for one year, with the possibility of re-nomination to serve for a second year. If you are enjoying your association with WiVLA, here’s your chance to be part of our future successes.
Several positions are available. Please email me at Leesteinertw@yahoo.com to chat about the role you could play in WiVLA’s exciting 2020 plans. We do ask our members to consider their own natural likes and acquired skills to find their best fit on our board. Do you know Excel? Have you balanced a checkbook? Do you love meeting new people? Do you think about creative issues and topics for programs? Do you like to organize collaborative work and events? These are all talents and skills that can be applied to the volunteer ideas and work on the WiVLA board.

All arts associations prize energetic spirits and the talents of working well with others, getting stuff done, and doing so with a sense of humor and a desire to - you guessed it - SERVE.

WiVLA's Pop-Up Market & Fundraiser
at the historic Printing Museum was a huge success! What better way to celebrate WiVLA's 25th Anniversary than in the Marketplace with our creations! Sellers, buyers, raffle-ticket holders, and people wanting to visit and share in the good events that WiVLA has sponsored for Houston women for 25 years had a great time together in a three-hour event. The light bites and beverages were wonderfully delicious, and we thank all the donors and businesses who spread a variety of sweet and savory trays and dishes on the refreshment table. Ciders and sparkling waters in several flavors were handed out to all who gathered.
A festive, busy crowd enjoyed the evening which included an impressive "swag" table of WiVLA memorabilia, many tables and booths displaying artistic creations, and an exciting raffle with excellent prizes.
Thank you to the many member volunteers and family members who helped with planning and set-up. Thank you to our raffle and refreshment donors! Thank you to all who attended and made the evening a happy event!
A partial list of raffle prizes and winners is here

WiVLA Collaboration:  "Compassion"
Houston Holocaust Museum, June, 2020

What does "compassion" really mean? Is it possible to change someone's level of compassion? Can someone who views others in negative ways come to a new understanding and compassionate point of view toward them? Will there always be othering of people? Is that who we are as humans?
Using the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides, the Holocaust Museum teaches the dangers of hatred, prejudice and apathy. Visits to the Museum often produce life-changing shifts in thoughts, attitudes, and actions. WiVLA is fortunate to be able to announce that the next WiVLA Collaboration Show will be held at the Houston Holocaust Museum.  Partnerships are being formed to work together to produce visual art and written words that enlarge the theme of "Compassion."
There are still spots available for this collaboration. See below for partnerships already formed. To sign up for this show (both partners must sign up on the same form), use this link:    https://fs8.formsite.com/wivla/1qazfqtr2z/index.html

Member Deborah Lindeen, LPC-AT/S, Board Certified Art Therapist, and SoulCollage(R) Facilitator, will present a workshop combining SoulCollage and the Enneagram at the Jung Center, November 9, 10 am - 4 pm. Entitled "Accelerating Your Awesomeness - Self Exploration with the Enneagram and SoulCollage(R)," this workshop combines the powerful personality system of the Enneagram with the richly creative art-making process of SoulCollage(R), and will help participants tap into their deepest motivations to explore the Self. (There are several short online assessments to help determine one's Enneagram type.) $110 for Jung Center members or $120 for nonmembers. Deborah will donate $10 to WiVLA for each WiVLA member who attends. * Have you ever done any Art Journaling? It’s a creative way to combine visual art with words/writing in a journal that is able to handle paints, collage, and other media. It’s often different than a sketchbook, although there is crossover, and different from a writing journal because of the visual art. But it can be any form you wish. Cori Austin manages a group that meets every 3rd Saturday at Mendenhall Community Center. Let her know if you’re interested in attending, and she’ll put you on the mailing list.  Artjournal50@gmail.com

Please send in your news - art exhibits, works published by the 25th of each month to be included in the following month's newsletter. Please share your good news with your fellow WiVLA members by sending to newsletter@wivla.org.
