The President's Message:
Gratitude
I am in awe of this organization, its history, its present, and its future! We had so much fun playing through the planning, preparing, presenting in pictures, and partying to celebrate 30 years of WiVLA!
What an incredible way to start a month that focuses on gratitude and gathering. If you were not able to attend, know that your name may have been mentioned and stories told because each of us brings a special part of us to this community and the way we learn and grow in our creativity and connections!

As we look toward our 31st year, we will be honoring what we’ve learned from our history so that we can pull the most beautiful threads forward into the next decade.

With so much gratitude and celebration!

 ~ Brooke Summers-Perry

What a Gem of a Celebration!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for WiVLA’s 30th Anniversary! Your presence made it a night to remember. For those of you who couldn’t attend, we missed you, but there will be more chances to connect soon—including our annual Holiday Party.

The event’s photos tell a story of sparkle and joy, capturing the vibrant energy of WiVLA members celebrating in style. A standout moment was the lively icebreaker “star game” led by Melissa Chambers and Margo Stutts Toombs (but it was really Melissa), which brought everyone together in laughter and conversation. The art table, organized by Gwen Womack, invited us all to express our creative, art-making selves. Each attendee designed a unique 4 x 6 card, which Gwen then quilted onto a large paper canvas—a beautiful keepsake and collective work of art for our community.

The evening flowed with delicious food, wine, door prizes, and a warm atmosphere. The Cloister Gallery was the perfect space, where we also able to enjoy the ARBOREA exhibit featuring art by several of our members. During the presentation honoring WiVLA’s rich history, Brooke Summers-Perry and Karleen Koen shared inspiring reflections of our journey over the past three decades. Our continued success is a testament to our members' involvement—whether through volunteer efforts at events, serving on the Board of Directors, or by participating in our member meetings and activities.

In recognition of our milestone, the City of Houston presented WiVLA with a proclamation, championed by Melody Locke, which she read aloud to us. The proclamation will be proudly displayed on our website for those who would like to read it.

Thank you again for celebrating this pearl anniversary with us!

All about Pearls
What do pearls mean to you?
  • Pearls hold diverse meanings across cultures and contexts. In Western societies, they symbolize purity, innocence, and elegance, often worn by brides on their wedding day. They are also associated with wealth and luxury due to their historical rarity and high value.
  • In Eastern cultures, particularly in China and Japan, pearls symbolize wisdom, prosperity, and spiritual enlightenment. They are believed to bring good fortune and ward off negative energy. In Chinese folklore, pearls were said to be formed in the brains of dragons and were thus highly prized for their mystical properties.
  • Pearls also hold religious significance in various faiths. In Christianity, they symbolize purity and are associated with the kingdom of heaven. In Hinduism and Buddhism, pearls represent spiritual enlightenment and the attainment of wisdom.
  • Beyond their symbolic meanings, pearls have practical applications as well. In traditional medicine, powdered pearls are used to treat various ailments and pearl powder is still used in cosmetics for its skin-brightening properties.
Overall, pearls embody a rich tapestry of meanings, ranging from purity and wealth to wisdom and spiritual enlightenment, making them one of human culture's most enduring and versatile symbols.

Writing with a Touch of Magic
During the October 2024 WiVLA meeting, guest presenter Laura Peña presented short-form poetry that could fit on a postcard. The poem can be about the image on the postcard or any subject. Postcard poetry can include themes and images or consist of centos from other poets’ works (with proper citations).

Watch the video to get ideas for creating poems for postcards and ways to send these creations to readers all over the world.

WiVLA Pearl for October
Kathi Crawford
I first learned about WiVLA through my friend, Margo Stutts Toombs, whom I met in a “Relax It’s Just Poetry” class with Cait Weiss Orcutt in June 2022. With Margo’s encouragement, I began signing up for WiVLA classes, starting with a Haiku workshop led by Denise Bossarte in August 2022. From the very first session, I felt welcomed and inspired to be part of such a vibrant group of creative women in Houston.

Though I was hesitant to officially join at first—fearing I might become overwhelmed as I tend to want to fully commit to everything I’m involved in—I continued to attend classes and events throughout the year. By July 2023, I was so deeply connected to the group that I decided to become a member.

In 2024, I had the honor of stepping into an At Large role on the WiVLA Board, leading the initiative to organize an October event celebrating WiVLA’s 30th anniversary. Thanks to the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers on the committee, planning this event has been both easy and rewarding. Every member I’ve met has a story about how WiVLA has enriched their lives, whether through creative growth, lasting friendships, or new opportunities.

One of my most memorable experiences was collaborating with Brooke Summers-Perry this year for the Entangled Collaboration, which culminated in standing-room-only readings and an artwork exhibit. I look forward to many more creative collaborations and projects with my fellow WiVLA artists and writers in the future.

Mildred J. Mills is Self-Love Advocate of the Year
"Well, my WIVLA community, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Because you and your tribe voted and pushed me over the finish line of the 2024 Impact Award, I am the “Self-Love Advocate of the Year” winner. This nomination happened because of the impact my book, “Daddy’s House,” had on the person who nominated me.

The I’m Loving Me Project will present the award on December 14th at the Winter Wonderland Holiday Gala in Atlanta, GA.

All I can say is WOW, and thank you for showing up and supporting me again."

 Ambassador of Self Care
A Life of Quiet Revolution and Resilience!
Growing up on a farm during the Jim Crow era, Mills learned valuable lessons from her father, who, despite being a Black man running a business during one of the most oppressive periods in American history, never let racism define him. “You can be anything you want to be,” he instilled in her—a belief that fueled her resilience.

Change by Liz Gilbert
The change from my father's pocket seemed a wonderful thing. He placed it on his dresser at night. Large, round quarters. Smaller, copper pen-nies. Even thinner, silver dimes. Occasionally, the unexpected thickness of a silver dollar. Those could not be taken. But the quarters could and I did steal them. Put them in my pocket. Clasped my hand around the cold, naughtiness and fondled them. Removed later, one quarter could buy my lunch. A bag of barbecue potato chips. A call, cold, bottle of Pepsi. Lunch for .25 cents. It was 1968.

My father's change... My change... Changes in my body. Pregnant, a new, tiny change within took me out of the pocket of my family. Transported me to another…man's pocket.

A younger version of my father left behind, my husband whose claims were made to the pocket between my legs where I sensed a change and from where my daughter would emerge. Change again this life of mine, forever changing.

Death to the old. Birth to the new.

Undiscovered, frightening paths led to more changes. Lead to more and more changes, which change me. Forever.

No more the girl wondering, I've wandered from the change in my father’s pocket. It is 1997.
